What goes into an arrow

Every Grain Counts.

Arrow weight isn’t just one number — it’s the sum of every component. Our calculator tracks all of them individually so you know exactly where your weight is coming from.

01

Shaft

GPI × Length

Your shaft’s grains-per-inch rating multiplied by cut shaft length. Usually the largest single contributor to total weight.

02

Point / Broadhead

Grains

Field point or broadhead. Has the biggest single effect on FOC balance and spine selection.

03

Insert & Nock

Grains

Often overlooked but significant for FOC tuning. Brass inserts can push 50 gr+.

04

Fletching & Wrap

Vanes or Feathers

Enter weight per vane and count. A printed wrap adds 5–12 gr. Every grain counts at the rear.

Front of Centre

What is FOC?

Front-of-Centre (FOC) is the percentage of the arrow’s weight that sits forward of the midpoint. It determines how the arrow flies and penetrates — and it’s the single biggest variable hunters underestimate.

10–15%

Hunting — Optimal

7–9%

Target / General

< 7%

Too little — erratic flight

> 15%

High FOC — reduces range

Reading your results

What the Numbers Mean.

< 350 gr

Light Arrow

Fast and flat-shooting but less kinetic energy on impact. Best for small game or target archery.

350–450 gr

Mid-Weight

The most common hunting setup. Good balance of speed, trajectory and penetration for most applications.

450–650 gr

Heavy

Slower but more momentum. Preferred for dangerous game where pass-through penetration is critical.

650+ gr

Ultra Heavy

Traditional and dangerous game. Maximum momentum and straight-line penetration through bone.
